about

Enthused by the successful results of the March 1998 session that eventually became the Discussing Clouds album, Pete and I had two further sessions in April, the first being again at Pete's flat (tracks 1-5) and the second being part of a 'Drum With Intent' jam across the road at the former Angel pub on Oxford Street. The djembe players were picked up by a spare mic on track 6; alas only their rhythms were recorded, not the names of the configuration who turned up that day, but grateful thanks go out to them. It was actually through Drum With Intent and its offspring band Djembelei that Pete and I met in the summer of 1997.

We continued a similar process as before, with Pete improvising over my minimal sequences which were either hand-played or automated material from my keyboard, with the exception of 'Courage' where our roles swapped and I improvised over Pete repetitively playing a fragment of one of his compositions. On 'Groovily Adrift' the improv role ended up being a pretty equal split. On 'Accelerando' we had both fallen into patterns and felt a lead instrument was needed, so I asked Chris Conway if he could improvise some of his whistle work over it and within half an hour he'd recorded not one but three layers and sent them over for me to integrate into the mix as required.

This Opal material has been patiently waiting and 26 years has been too long. It feels good to finally bring it to a conclusion. The punning title was suggested by Pete in 2013 (apologies to Wrigley's).

about

Opal Leicester, UK

The duo of acoustic guitarist Peter Rigg with keyboard player and percussionist Jim Tetlow. They shared an interest in minimalist music by people such as Terry Riley and their improvised jams were frequently suffused with patterns akin to this genre, either hand played or with primitive keyboard sequencing as the backdrop, embellished by Pete's finger-picking folkie guitar arpeggios and licks. ... more
